What Is AEO? Why Hong Kong Medical Clinics Should Care About Answer Engine Optimization

A question mark and an extracted answer card, representing answer engine optimisation

More and more patients don't stop at Google — they ask ChatGPT directly, or read the AI summary at the top of the results page. Once AI becomes part of the patient's search path, whether your clinic appears inside the AI's answer matters as much as your Google ranking. That is the problem AEO sets out to solve.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO aims to rank you high on the results page and win the click to your site. AEO goes further: it makes AI search tools understand, trust, and reference your content as an answer source.

The technical groundwork overlaps — both need clear structure, authoritative content, and schema markup — but AEO leans hard on machine-readable answer formats: explicit questions, concise direct answers, and extractable passages.

Where should a medical clinic start with AEO?

Start with the questions patients actually ask. Turn common questions about symptoms, treatments, pricing, and booking into structured FAQs, each with a concise, informational answer.

Add FAQPage schema so search engines and AI tools can accurately map questions to answers. Then build E-E-A-T authority with physician bylines and credentials — medical content especially rewards trusted sources.

One honest caveat: AEO cannot guarantee you will be cited. Any claim of “guaranteed placement in AI answers” is not credible; what we do is optimise the structure and work toward the opportunity to be referenced.

Different AI tools cite in different ways

ChatGPT blends what the model already knows with live search results; whether sources appear depends on how the question is asked and the settings at the time. Perplexity lists citations as footnotes and tends to favour recent, clearly structured pages.

Google AI Overviews build on Google's own index and existing quality signals, so pages that already perform in organic search generally stand a better chance of being drawn into a summary.

In other words, AEO isn't a trick aimed at one platform. It's shaping content so it can be understood, extracted, and verified — engines differ in their preferences, but clear structure and credible sourcing are common ground.

Zero-click search: visibility versus traffic

When AI answers directly, patients may never click through — the so-called zero-click search. Traffic appears to fall, yet being referenced still builds recognition: a clinic name seen repeatedly across answers shapes the eventual choice.

So content needs layers: informational questions earn citations with concise answers, while decision-stage content — booking, fees, practitioner credentials — must let patients complete the next step once they do click.

Watch the trend in Google Search Console too: rising impressions with a falling click-through rate is often the signature of answer-style search rather than failing content.

Three common misconceptions about AEO

One: AEO replaces SEO. In reality SEO is the foundation — get content, technicals, and authority right and AEO has something to work with; they share the same base.

Two: adding FAQ schema means you've “done AEO”. Structured data is only the machine-readable layer; whether the content is accurate, specific, and credible is what decides the outcome.

Three: you can pay to “buy” a citation slot in AI answers. No such mechanism exists, and any service promising guaranteed AI citations is not credible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AEO guarantee my clinic gets cited by ChatGPT?
No. No one can guarantee an AI citation. We optimise content structure and authority signals to improve the chance of being referenced.
Do AEO and SEO need to be done separately?
No. They share the same content and technical foundation, and our monthly plans cover both SEO and AEO together.
How do I know whether AI mentions my clinic?
Test regularly: ask the questions your patients ask in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and others, and record whether you're mentioned and which sources are cited. Because answers vary by phrasing and over time, track a fixed set of questions for the trend, and read it alongside impression changes in Search Console.
Is AEO suitable for a clinic that's just starting out?
Yes, but sequence matters. With little content, first get the technical base and core service pages right, then build up around the questions patients actually ask. Chasing AI citations before the foundation is stable rarely achieves much.
How long before AEO shows results?
There's no fixed cycle — it depends on when content is indexed and refreshed, and on each tool's sources. Typically improvements in structure and authority show up in organic search first, with AI citations following later, and never guaranteed.
